DS2109 폼은 미국 비자(J1과 J2(동반자))를 받기 위해 가장 중요한 서류로 모든 가족이 별도로 받아야합니다. 이번에 저도 2달에 거쳐 DS2109를 받는 동안 요령만 잘알고 있었으면 1개월 이내로 단축할 수 있었을 것 같다는 느낌이 들어서 며칠 전에 경험담을 올렸는데, 아래에 복사하였으니 참고바랍니다.
한가지 추가할 내용은 비행기표를 사면서 J1(J2 포함) 비자는 미국 항공사(대한항공은 안됨)에서 학생요금 적용이 가능하므로 편도 기준으로 1인당 약 20만원정도 절약할 수 있었으니 참고바라며, 항공권 문의는 왼편 제휴서비스의 민트여행사에 견적의뢰를 하시면 친절하게 안내를 받을 수 있습니다.
1. 11월 28일 : 미국 교수님에게 초청에 대한 답장 메일을 보내면서 911 테러 사건으로 한국에서 비자 처리가 매우 까다로워지고 있으므로 빠른 처리를 부탁한다는 내용과 함께 미리 DS-2019 처리에 필요한 인적 사항(워드로 작성)과 여권 사본(스캔)을 첨부해서 보냈습니다.
2. 12월 10일 : 미국 교수(초청 학과 학과장)로부터 재정보증서를 요구하는 메일이 다시 왔었고, 총장 명의의 재정보증서와 재직증명서를 스캔해서 메일로 미리 보내고 원본(인적사항, 여권 복사본, 재정보증서, 재직증명서)은 UPS로 다시 보냈습니다.
3. 12월 15일 : 미국 교수로부터 제 서류를 받아서 International Student Office에 보냈다는 메일을 받았습니다.
4. 1월 9일 : 미국 대학 International Student Office의 DS-2019 담당자로부터 저에 대한 Draft DS-2019 form을 메일로 받았습니다. 이 때 집사람의 성과 이름이 바뀌고, 생년월일이 틀려서 수정 요청 메일을 다시 보내면서, 비자 인터뷰 예약과 이사 계획이 결정된 상태이니 잘 못하면 한국에서 homeless family가 될 수 있으니 빠른 처리를 부탁한다는 내용을 보냈습니다.
5. 1월 21일 : 미국 대학 International Student Office 담당자로부터 FedFx로 저의 DS-2019 서류를 보낸다는 메일이 왔습니다.
6. 1월 26일 : 드디어 DS-2019 서류를 받았습니다.
저의 경험담을 보시면 정식 DS-2019 서류를 발급받기 위한 총 소요기간은 2달 정도 걸렸습니다. 그리고 1-3번 과정까지 약 17일이 걸렸는데, 미국 교수에게 빠른 처리를 부탁하시면 1-3번 과정까지 일주일 정도면 가능할 것 같습니다. 단, 수신자는 초청교수가 아닌 초청 학과의 학과장으로 하시는 것이 좋습니다.
참고로 대부분 주변 교수들이 1번 과정을 처리 할 때 미국에서 인적 사항 요구를 받고 나서 보내기 때문에 1번 과정에서도 상당한 시간을 소비하는 것 같습니다.
그리고 3-4번 과정에서 실제로 International Student Office 담당자가 DS-2019를 처리한 시간은 약 24일정도 걸렸는데 크리스마스와 년말 년시, 그리고 Draft DS-2019 form을 수정하는데 외국 출장 관계로 메일을 확인하지 못해 1주일을 낭비하였으니 정상적으로 처리하면 1주일에서 10일정도면 가능할 것 같습니다.
따라서 다음 방법으로 미리 DS-2019에 필요한 서류를 보내시고, 초청 학과에서 International Student Office의 담당자의 메일 주소를 알아서 빠른 처리를 부탁하시면, 넉넉잡고 20일에서 1개월내로 정식 DS-2019를 받을 수 있지 않을 까 생각합니다.
미국 교수님에게 미리 DS-2019 처리에 필요한 인적 사항(워드로 작성)과 여권 사본(스캔), 재정보증서와 재직증명서를 스캔해서 메일로 보내고 원본은 UPS로 미리 보내면, 최소 15일은 단축 가능(?)합니다.

일주일 정도후 초청교수에게 담당자에게 서류를 보냈는지 한번 확인하셔서 보냈다고 하면, DS-2019 담당자에게 여권 스캔과 인적사항을 한번 더 보내면서 여권에 기재된 인적사항과
DS-2019에 기재된 내용이 다르면 비자 발급이 어렵다는 사정 설명을 하면서 다시 한번 빠른 처리를 부탁합니다. 특히 와이프의 성과 이름을 혼돈할 수 있으니 와이프？ 여권 사본을 참고하여 정확하게 기재해 달라고 부탁바랍니다.
